Mad toucan series

In the forest

Toucans have been seen in the city of Le Havre, mad toucans, flying over the harbour sky.
However, not such a long time ago, they were in the Amazon forest where they lived their happy toucans lives.

They arrived in France, brought by a French poet, who bought them on an illegal wild animals market of a small town, lost somewhere on the forest.

The poet returned home from his trip on the cheapest cargo boat we could find. He kept the birds free inside his cabin. Toucans are very sweet and friendly birds.

They arrived in Le Havre, France on March 2020, at the very beginning of the first lockdown. The pandemic was becoming dangerous. The crew and the few passengers were not aloud to disembark.

After two weeks confined in his ship’s cabin , the french poet decided he should better let the toucans free. What he did…

The French poet

This is the second frame on the the Mad toucans story. This interactive motion design experiment is about Greensock and javascript animation and researches on the best way of drawing and animating SVG, for the web.

I draw with a pencil or fusain, digitize and clean up and color drawing with Illustrator, export to SVG,  optimize with Jake Archibald’s app SVGOMG and animate with Greensock – Gsap. The inspiration cames from Le Havre city and its harbour, Blaise Cendrars, the toucans and the forest.

*hommage to Blaise Cendrars who made several trips to Brazil. In the book, “Le lotissement du ciel” he wrote about one of his journey back to France. In the transatlantic ship, he had with him, in his cabin, 250 birds named ‘sept-couleurs’ and tiny monkeys called sagouins.

At the wild animal market

The French poet, back from his trekking in the jungle, arrives at the wild animal market on a nearby town. Toucans go crazy.
